Can You Get a Brazilian Wax on Your Period?

Your appointment is on the calendar, and then your period shows up a few days early. It happens all the time, and it’s one of the most common questions clients ask us. The short answer: yes, you can usually get a Brazilian wax on your period. With a little preparation, it’s a normal, professional appointment for our specialists. This guide covers what to wear, why your skin may feel more sensitive, how to stay comfortable, and how to plan your visits around your cycle.

At Sugaring & Waxing by Ervina in Sherman Oaks, our Brazilian service is available with either waxing or sugaring, and everything below applies to both.

Can you get a Brazilian wax on your period?

The short answer is yes. Most clients simply come in as planned during their period. Our specialists work with clients on their period regularly, and they don’t think twice about it. What matters is that you feel comfortable and that the area can be kept clean during the service. For most people, that simply means using the right period product and planning a few small comfort steps.

If you’re on a heavier day or feeling crampy, a few simple comfort steps (covered below) go a long way, and your specialist will do everything they can to keep you comfortable.

Wear a tampon or menstrual cup, not a pad

This is the one rule that really matters. A Brazilian covers the front, the back, and the area in between, so a pad or period underwear would get in the way. Please come in wearing:

  • A fresh tampon, inserted shortly before your appointment, or
  • A menstrual cup or disc that you’re comfortable wearing and that doesn’t leak for you.

With a tampon, your specialist will simply tuck the string out of the way while working. If you don’t use internal products, let your specialist know at the start of your appointment. A bikini service instead of a Brazilian, which only treats the edges, may be an easier option for that visit.

Why your skin may feel more sensitive around your period

Many people notice that hair removal feels more intense in the days just before and during their period. Hormone levels shift across the menstrual cycle, and lots of clients describe feeling more tender or reactive at this time. Everyone is different, though: some people feel no change at all, while others find their pain tolerance noticeably lower.

If you know you tend to be more sensitive, these steps can help:

  • Plan ahead when you book. If you know your cycle, the lighter days toward the end of your period are often more comfortable than the first day or two.
  • Consider an over-the-counter pain reliever. Some clients take one they already use, about 30–60 minutes before the appointment. Follow the label, and check with your doctor or pharmacist if you’re unsure what’s right for you.
  • Drink water and eat beforehand. Coming in hydrated and not on an empty stomach helps many people feel steadier.
  • Breathe slowly and tell your specialist if you need a short pause. Pausing is always fine.

Hygiene and etiquette: what to do before you arrive

It’s normal to feel a little self-conscious, but our specialists keep things simple and discreet. A few small steps help you feel fresh:

  • Shower or freshen up on the day of your appointment, using a gentle, fragrance-free wash.
  • Change your tampon or empty your cup shortly before you come in.
  • Bring a spare tampon or liner and a clean pair of underwear in your bag.
  • Wear loose, comfortable bottoms, such as soft cotton pants or a skirt.
  • Mention your period when you check in. It’s not awkward; it just helps your specialist plan.

Most importantly, don’t apologize. Periods are a normal part of life, and our specialists treat them that way.

Sugaring vs waxing on your period

Both methods work well during your period. Sugaring paste is made from sugar, lemon, and water and is applied at body temperature. It sticks mainly to hair and dead skin rather than live skin, which is why many clients with sensitive skin find it gentler. If you notice that you’re more tender during your period, sugaring may feel more comfortable. Waxing is fast and very effective, especially on coarse hair, and plenty of clients are perfectly happy with it at any point in their cycle.

Aftercare during your period

Aftercare is the same as usual, with a couple of extra notes for this time of the month:

  • For the first 24–48 hours, skip hot baths, saunas, intense workouts, and swimming.
  • Change tampons and pads regularly, and keep the area clean and dry.
  • Choose breathable cotton underwear instead of tight synthetic fabrics.
  • If you switch back to pads after your appointment, pick soft, unscented ones to avoid extra friction on freshly treated skin.
  • After a couple of days, return to gentle exfoliation a few times a week.

Our waxing aftercare tips cover the full routine, and if bumps tend to show up a week or two later, see our guide to preventing ingrown hairs after a Brazilian wax.

Planning your Brazilian around your cycle

Most clients come in as planned, period or not. If you’d like to make your visits even easier, a little planning when you book helps:

  • Track your cycle. A period app makes it simple to see which days are coming up when you book.
  • Choose a time that suits you when booking. If you prefer, pick a day a few days after your heaviest days, or the week after your period, which many people find most comfortable.
  • Keep a regular schedule. Consistent visits usually make each one smoother. Our post on how often to get a Brazilian wax explains the ideal timing.
  • Check your hair length. Hair needs some length for the wax or paste to grip it. See how long hair needs to be for a Brazilian.

If your period starts unexpectedly, you can usually still come in. Wear a fresh tampon or menstrual cup, and let your specialist know at the start of the appointment so they can make you comfortable.

If you have a medical condition, unusual pain, irritation in the area, or other health concerns, check with your doctor before waxing.

Frequently asked questions

Is it rude to get a Brazilian wax on your period?

Not at all. As long as you wear a tampon or menstrual cup, it’s a routine appointment for our specialists. Letting us know at check-in is a kind courtesy, but there’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

Does a Brazilian wax hurt more on your period?

For some people, yes. Many clients feel more sensitive just before and during their period, while others notice no difference. Booking a lighter day, staying hydrated, and choosing sugaring can make it more comfortable.

Can I wear a pad to my Brazilian appointment?

A pad isn’t practical for a Brazilian, because the service includes the whole area. Please use a tampon or menstrual cup. If that’s not an option for you, a bikini service, which only treats the edges, can be an easier choice for that visit.

What if my period starts on the day of my appointment?

You can usually still come in. Wear a fresh tampon or menstrual cup, bring a spare, and let your specialist know at the start of your appointment so they can make you comfortable. It’s something our specialists handle all the time.

Is it safe to get a Brazilian wax on your period?

For most healthy people, having a period doesn’t by itself rule out a Brazilian. If you have a medical condition, are taking medication that affects your skin, or have any concerns, check with your doctor first.
