Underarm and Face Waxing Before Halloween and Holiday Parties: When to Book

Halloween is a few weeks away, and after that the calendar fills up fast: Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving, office parties, and December get-togethers. If your plans include a costume with face paint or a sleeveless holiday dress, a little timing goes a long way. The key to waxing before an event is booking early enough for any redness to calm down, but close enough that you still feel perfectly smooth when you walk in the door.

At Sugaring & Waxing by Ervina in Sherman Oaks, two of the most popular pre-party services are underarms and the face. Here’s how our specialists suggest planning both, whether you choose waxing or sugaring.

When to book waxing before an event

Facial skin and underarm skin react a little differently, so they don’t need exactly the same lead time:

  • Face (brows, lip, chin, full face): 2–3 days before. Facial skin is thin and flushes easily. A couple of days gives any pinkness time to fade and lets you wear makeup comfortably on the big night.
  • Underarms: 1–3 days before. Underarm skin usually settles quickly, and you’ll want a day or so before deodorant, fragrance, and a fitted outfit anyway.
  • First time? Never the same day. If you’ve never been waxed or sugared on an area, book a trial visit 2–3 weeks ahead so you know how your skin responds. That way the pre-party appointment is a routine touch-up, not an experiment.

For a Halloween party on Saturday, October 31, that might look like a face appointment on Wednesday, October 28 or Thursday, October 29, with underarms on the same visit or a day later.

How long does your hair need to be?

Wax and sugar both need something to hold on to. As a general guide:

  • Underarms: about 1/4 inch, roughly the length of a grain of rice, or about 2–3 weeks of growth after shaving. Sugaring can often grab hair a little shorter.
  • Face: facial hair is finer, but it still needs to be visible above the skin. Skip shaving, dermaplaning, or hair-removal creams on the area for a couple of weeks beforehand.
  • Brows: put the tweezers down for 2–3 weeks so your specialist has enough growth to shape a clean, even line.

Simple prep in the days before

  • Exfoliate gently 1–2 days before. A soft washcloth or mild scrub helps lift dead skin so hair releases more easily. Skip it the day of your appointment.
  • Pause retinoids and strong actives on your face. Retinol, prescription retinoids, glycolic or salicylic acid, and strong peels can make skin more fragile and more likely to lift or irritate. Many people pause them for several days to a week before face waxing, but the right timing depends on your products, so ask your dermatologist. If you take or recently took isotretinoin, tell your specialist; waxing is usually avoided for months afterward.
  • Come with clean skin. Arrive with no heavy makeup on the area being treated and no deodorant on your underarms if possible.
  • Avoid sunburn. Wax and sugar should never go on sunburned or broken skin.

Face zones: from brows to full face

You don’t have to wax the whole face to feel polished for a party. Common zones include:

  • Brows: shaping and cleanup for a fresh, defined frame. See our eyebrow wax and shaping service.
  • Upper lip: quick and especially helpful before lipstick or close-up photos.
  • Chin: removes stray or darker hairs that can catch the light.
  • Cheeks and sideburns: helps foundation and blush sit more smoothly, without visible fuzz under flash.
  • Full face: combines the areas above for an even, smooth canvas, a popular choice before full-face costume makeup.

Makeup, costume paint, and self-tanner timing

Freshly treated follicles are open for a little while, so what you put on your skin right afterward matters:

  • Makeup: wait about 24 hours before heavy foundation, contour, or full makeup on waxed areas.
  • Costume makeup and adhesives: face paint, glitter, and lash or prosthetic glue can be harsh. Leave at least 24 hours, ideally longer, and patch-test new products in advance.
  • Self-tanner or spray tan: wax or sugar first, then tan 24–48 hours later. Waxing after a fresh tan can lift some of the color and leave it uneven.
  • Underarms: skip deodorant, antiperspirant, and fragrance for about 24 hours.

Sensitive skin? Sugaring can be a gentler option

If your face tends to turn red easily, or you’ve had irritation from wax before, sugaring is worth considering. The sugar paste is made from simple ingredients, is applied at lukewarm temperature, and is designed to grip hair rather than skin. Many sensitive-skin clients find it more comfortable on the face and underarms. You can compare both methods in our article on sugaring vs. waxing.

Whichever you choose, mention any skin conditions, medications, or recent treatments at your visit so your specialist can adjust the approach.

Halloween costumes and sleeveless holiday outfits

Costumes often show more skin than everyday clothes, from off-shoulder looks to raised-arm group photos. Smooth underarms mean one less thing to think about. On the face, a full-face or targeted wax helps costume makeup blend instead of catching on fine hair.

The same goes for holiday parties: sleeveless dresses, satin tops, and close-up photos under bright lights all reward booking a few days ahead instead of squeezing it in that afternoon.

Plan your holiday calendar with a 3–5 week rhythm

Instead of booking in a rush before every party, think of the season as one smooth schedule. Most underarm and face hair grows back on a roughly 3–5 week cycle, so one appointment per event cluster works well:

  • Late October: 2–3 days before Halloween.
  • Late November: early in Thanksgiving week (Thanksgiving is November 26 this year).
  • Mid to late December: a few days before your biggest holiday party, which also carries you into New Year’s Eve.

Staying consistent also tends to make regrowth finer and appointments quicker over time. If you keep a bikini routine too, our post on how often to get a Brazilian wax can help you line everything up on the same visits.

What to avoid for 24–48 hours afterward

  • Heat: saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and very hot showers.
  • Sweaty workouts: give underarms a day or two before intense exercise or hot yoga.
  • Sun and tanning beds: freshly treated skin is more sensitive to UV; use sunscreen on your face once it has settled.
  • Picking or tweezing: leave small bumps and stray hairs alone.
  • Scrubs: wait a couple of days, then resume gentle exfoliation to help prevent ingrowns.

For the full routine, see our waxing aftercare tips, and if bumps are a recurring problem, our guide to preventing ingrown hairs applies to underarms as well.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my face waxed the day of a party?

If you’re a regular client and your skin never reacts, a morning appointment can work. For first-timers or sensitive skin, we recommend 2–3 days ahead so any redness fades before makeup and photos.

How long do underarm results last?

Most clients stay smooth for about 2–3 weeks, with noticeable regrowth around weeks 3–5. Regular appointments usually help results last longer.

Will face waxing cause breakouts?

A few small bumps can happen, especially the first time. Keeping hands off your face, skipping heavy makeup for about a day, and avoiding heat and sweat help most skin settle quickly.

How much do underarm and full-face waxing cost?

At the time of writing, underarms are $29 and full face is $65, as listed on our waxing and sugaring pages. Check those pages for current pricing.
