Fresh brows look sharp the moment you leave the studio, and what you do over the next two days helps keep them that way. Good eyebrow wax aftercare is simple: keep the area clean and cool, skip heat and strong skincare for a little while, and let your skin settle. This guide walks you through what’s normal right after your appointment, what to do and avoid in the first 24 and 48 hours, and how often to book so your shape stays crisp.
At Sugaring & Waxing by Ervina in Sherman Oaks, our eyebrow wax service shapes and corrects brows with wax and fine tweezing, and every visit ends with a soothing post-wax treatment. The tips below pick up where that treatment leaves off.
What’s normal right after an eyebrow wax?
A little pinkness is completely normal. The skin around the brows is thin, and removing hair from the root briefly wakes it up. Most people notice one or more of the following:
- Mild redness around the brow line, which often fades within an hour or a few hours.
- Slight puffiness or warmth, especially if you have sensitive or fair skin.
- Tiny bumps where hairs were removed, which usually calm down within a day or so.
Everyone’s skin responds a little differently, so if you’re waxing your brows for the first time, plan your appointment at a time when a bit of temporary pinkness won’t bother you. If you have a big event coming up, our guide to face waxing before an event covers timing in more detail.
The first 24 hours: do’s and don’ts
The first day is when your skin is most reactive, so this is where aftercare matters most.
Do
- Keep your hands off. Touching, rubbing or picking at the area can transfer bacteria to freshly opened follicles.
- Cleanse gently. Use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry with a clean towel.
- Cool things down. A clean, cool compress held lightly for a few minutes can ease redness and warmth.
- Use a simple soothing product such as pure aloe vera gel, as long as you know your skin tolerates it.
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase that night.
Don’t
- Skip heat. Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, very hot showers and sweaty workouts. Heat and sweat can irritate open follicles.
- Skip makeup on the waxed area. Brow pencils, powders, foundation and concealer can clog the follicles and lead to bumps.
- Skip exfoliants and actives. No scrubs, retinoids, or AHA/BHA acids around the brows for now.
- Skip swimming pools and hot tubs, since chlorine and shared water can sting freshly waxed skin.
- Skip heavily fragranced lotions or anything that has irritated your skin before.
24 to 48 hours: easing back into your routine
By the second day, most redness and bumps have usually settled. You can slowly return to your normal routine, but keep it gentle:
- Continue cleansing softly and keep your hands away from the area.
- Light exercise is usually fine. Save the most intense, sweaty sessions until the skin feels completely calm.
- If the skin still looks pink or feels tender, give it another day before returning to heat or strong products.
Makeup, brow tint and brow products
Wait about 24 hours before applying brow makeup or face makeup directly on the waxed skin. When you start again, use clean brushes and spoolies, and choose products you’ve used before rather than testing something new.
If you’re planning a brow tint, a lamination or any other brow treatment, it’s best to space it apart from waxing rather than doing everything on irritated skin. Mention your plans when you book so our specialists can suggest a comfortable order.
Skincare ingredients to pause
Some popular skincare ingredients make skin thinner or more sensitive, and that matters for waxing. For a few days after your appointment, pause these on the brow area:
- Retinol, retinoids and similar vitamin A products
- Glycolic, lactic, salicylic and other exfoliating acids
- Benzoyl peroxide and other strong acne treatments
- Physical scrubs, peels and cleansing brushes
Before your appointment, always let your specialist know if you use retinoids, prescription acne medication, or any other product your doctor has recommended for your skin. Some of these can make the skin more fragile, and our specialists will want to know before waxing. If you’re not sure whether a product is safe to use around waxing, ask your doctor or dermatologist.
Protect your brows from the sun
Freshly waxed skin can be more sensitive to sunlight, and Southern California sunshine is strong year-round. For the first day or two, wear a hat or sunglasses when you’re outdoors for long. Once the skin has calmed, apply a gentle sunscreen as part of your usual routine, avoiding the area if it still feels irritated.
When to see a doctor
Serious reactions are uncommon, but it’s worth knowing the signs. Contact a doctor if you notice:
- Redness, swelling or pain that gets worse instead of better after a couple of days
- Pus, crusting, or skin that feels hot to the touch
- A spreading rash, hives or strong itching
- Swelling around the eyes or any sign of an allergic reaction
Let us know as well, so our specialists can note it for your next visit.
How often should you get your eyebrows waxed?
This is one of the most searched brow questions, and the answer depends on how fast your hair grows. Most clients enjoy clean, defined brows for about 3 to 5 weeks. Many people find that booking every 4 weeks or so keeps the shape crisp without letting stray hairs take over.
A few tips for the time between visits:
- Tweeze sparingly. Removing an obvious stray hair below the brow is fine, but avoid reshaping the arch or the top line yourself. Over-tweezing between appointments is one of the most common reasons brows look uneven.
- Growing your brows out? Tell your specialist at the start of your visit. Booking a little further apart and letting hair grow in fully gives our specialists more to work with when creating a fuller shape.
- Keep a regular rhythm. Consistent appointments make it easier to keep the shape balanced over time.

Frequently asked questions
How long does redness last after an eyebrow wax?
For most people, redness fades within a few hours, and almost always within a day. Sensitive skin may stay pink a little longer. A cool compress can help.
When can I wear makeup after an eyebrow wax?
It’s best to wait about 24 hours before putting makeup directly on the waxed skin. Use clean brushes and familiar products when you start again.
Can I work out after waxing my eyebrows?
Skip sweaty workouts, hot yoga and saunas for the first 24 hours. After that, light exercise is usually fine as long as your skin feels calm.
How often should I get my eyebrows waxed?
Most people book every 3 to 5 weeks, depending on how quickly their hair grows. Avoid heavy tweezing between visits so your specialist has enough hair to keep the shape even.
Can I use retinol after an eyebrow wax?
Pause retinol and other strong actives on the brow area for a few days after waxing. Always tell your specialist before your appointment if you use retinoids or acne medication.
